Fragmented
To coin a phrase from American Beauty -
I Need a Little Effing Discipline
I currently own 21 website domains, 15 associated email addresses, plus multiple Gmail accounts. (My primary Gmail account currently has 37,422 emails in its inbox.) Several of my businesses also have Facebook, YouTube, and other social media pages attached for marketing and promotion.
I used to have many more domains and websites. But I’ve scaled back.
That said, I’m tired of trying to keep up with everything. So, I’ve decided to revise my thinking and my approach. I like the idea of simplifying so that only one platform serves all my varied needs and interests.
History
I grew up in a time before the internet and cell phones. Things were much simpler then. And as much as I love the ease of access to information, I’m feeling like the internet also creates a massive distraction that, if we’re not careful, can keep us from achieving the goals and dreams we want to accomplish in life.
On top of that, cell phones have made it so that most of us feel the need to be accessible to anyone placing demands on our time and attention 24/7.
That creates a lot of stress and pressure.
Social Media Madness
Needing to be in all the places, all the time, is not realistic or emotionally and mentally healthy. No wonder we’re seeing such an increase in anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and other mental health issues in our society in recent years.
Self-Employed
Working for myself means there are pros and cons. Trade-offs. I have almost complete time freedom and the ability to schedule work as I please. But earning a consistent income by promoting my businesses can mean working many more hours than an 8-5 employee scenario requires.
And that can become just as unhealthy if you push yourself too hard.
Being Fragmented
I will admit to having “Shiny Object” syndrome. I have a wide variety of passions and interests. But, if I’m not careful, trying to do too many things can lead to scrambled thinking resulting in non-productivity.
Can you relate?
Streamlining to Just One Platform
My hope is that moving all of my online activities to one platform: Substack, will help refine my To-Do List, providing more peace of mind, singularity of purpose, and laser focus.
Simplicity Without Sacrifice
Now, instead of maintaining and posting to multiple websites, creating numerous YouTube channels for video content, a separate account for publishing a podcast, and monitoring several newsletter accounts to stay in touch with my followers, I can do it all right here on Substack.
And I gotta tell you, that sounds like a huge load-off relief to me!
So, I’ll still publish my content to my Facebook and Twitter accounts. But I’ll do that by sharing to those destinations from within this platform.
And hopefully, I’ll get a lot more done in less time and achieve better results.
Hey, maybe I’ll even free up extra time to focus on writing more books!
One can only hope!
