The recipes you keep asking about — and the woman who made them first

There is a kind of magic that lives in recipe cards — not the printed kind you find tucked in a cookbook, but the hand-scrawled ones. The ones with a smudge of butter on the corner (or more likely, as in my case, so completely saturated with grease that the writing is barely visible anymore!) and a measurement written twice because someone crossed out the first one. The ones that smell faintly of vanilla and time.

My mother hand-wrote those cards and kept them in a large, double-wide, metal recipe box. And whether she knew it or not, she was practicing a quiet kind of kitchen witchery every time she tied on her apron.

This week, I want to share something that has been filling my heart: the recipes getting the most love right now in my little Etsy shop are mostly the ones that came straight from her kitchen. The bars and squares she made for church potlucks, for after-school treats, for Sunday afternoons when the house smelled of something warm and sweet and everything felt safe.

These are those recipes. And I think she would be tickled to know people are still making them.

Oh, this... This was a special-occasion dessert — the kind Mama made when company was coming or when she wanted to make something feel a little bit fancy without spending all day in the kitchen. A buttery graham cracker crust, a layer of silky cream cheese filling, and that glossy cherry topping that gleams like rubies in the afternoon light. Every bite is cool and sweet and just a little tangy. She always made it the night before and let it chill overnight.

🍋  Tangy Lemon Squares

If Cherry Cheesecake was for company, Lemon Squares were for church events — and we rarely got a whole square ourselves. But she always carefully cut around the entire pan's edges so that each piece was square and identical...and she let us eat those crunchy edge pieces. Mama's lemon squares have a classic shortbread crust that crumbles just right, and the lemon curd layer is tart enough to make you squint in the best possible way. Dusted with powdered sugar that melts on your tongue before you even finish chewing. These are my grandkids' favorites. I make several times throughout the year for family gatherings. And I always, always make them for Christmas, too.

🍫  Best Ever Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars

This is by far the most popular item in my Etsy shop. Remember those Chocolate Peanut Butter bars you'd get from your grade school lunch lady? Well, these are those! Three layers of pure comfort: a dense, cookie-like base, a smooth chocolate fudge middle, and a thick peanut butter crown on top. Rich, indulgent, and completely irresistible whether at room temperature or cold from the fridge.

🍫  Best Ever Dark Chocolate Brownies

Every baker has a brownie recipe, and this one is mine. Crackly on top and fudgy all the way through — not cakey, never cakey. My son and I played around with this recipe until we got it just right! SUPER EASY to make! Just stir the ingredients together in one pan on the stove-top, pour into your baking dish, and BAM! Dense, dark, chewy, and full of intense chocolate flavor! They are perfect every time!

🖤  Gourmet Cream Cheese Brownies

A marriage of two of the world's finest things: rich chocolate brownie and tangy cheesecake, swirled together into something almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. These were Mama's 'fancied up' version of the classic brownie — the ones she made when she wanted to impress someone or when she felt particularly celebratory. (*Another one of those 'For the church potluck' items we only got at Christmas-time.) The cream cheese layer ribbons through the chocolate in creamy, silky swirls, and when you cut them, every square looks like a little work of art. They are every bit as delicious as they are gorgeous.

From My Mama's Kitchen to Yours

My mother would never have called herself a kitchen witch. I'm sure she would have laughed at the idea. But to her, in a very bone-deep way, feeding people was a sacred act. The time she spent at the stove was not wasted time. It was one of the primary ways she expressed love for her family and friends. She completely embraced the idea that something made with your own hands and offered with love provided a different kind of nourishment than anything you could buy.

I think she was right.
