Sundays Mean Coffee Church
Jeff and I started this weekly ritual. Somehow we dubbed it ‘Coffee Church.’ That’s literally what we call it.
A little background.
You may know we both grew up in devout Mormon (LDS - Latter-day Saint) homes. So, we went to church every. single. week. of our childhood.
And we carried this into our adult lives.
Until we didn’t.
It’s the magnetism that drew us together, though. So, there’s that.
Individually, we each studied the doctrines and decided the religion didn’t make sense. This happened before we ever met. But that’s the unifying truth that caused the domino effect resulting in our eventual meeting.
That’s a story for another time.
Anyhow, we lost interest in ‘church.’
Well, that’s more true for Jeff than it is for me. He just quit religion.
Done. Fini. Sayōnara, Ciao. Auf wiedersehn.
I’m out.
Me?
Not as much.
I’m WAY more social than he is. Jeff is pretty self-actualized. In other words - he’s perfectly content spending exorbitant amounts of time all by himself.
Well…not completely by himself. He likes spending time with ME ;)
He’s kind of like Red Foreman from That 70’s Show. He mostly only wants to spend time with Kitty.
Yeah. That’s Jeff. With me.
But I need more social interaction. Face time.
Ok…granted, Covid really changed me.
The mandated isolation (hey, we lived in the Greater Portland Oregon Metro area. Nuff said.)
I used to be much more social than I am today. But still. I need engagement.
So, Coffee Church.
What? You’re probably not seeing a correlation here.
Bear with me.
I’ve spent not insignificant amounts of time researching and checking out different churches wherever we’ve lived over the past 25 years. And the problem is…
I come up empty.
Whenever I think I’ve found a church that might be a good fit…
which mostly means there’s an awesome music ministry and pretty laid-back attitudes when it comes to DOGMA…the judginess sets in.
And I. Just. Can’t.
So, Coffee Church.
Jeff grinds up his home-roasted coffee beans and brews me a nice mugful. Then I load up the coffee pot with our ‘follow-up’ decaf. And we meet in his office space.
There’s no set agenda…other than the all-important COFFEE. Duh.
But we always find something to talk about…
Frequently our discussion turns toward all things ‘Spiritual,’ esoteric, or belief-based.
But Jeff loves physics. And math.
So, we frequently delve into those subjects, too.
Which, when you think about it, leads to all kinds of crazy-cool conversations! Astronomy, the origins of life on this planet, where and how RELIGION started. The evolution of ‘scriptural’ writings, the development of deities evolving into religious thought. And how all of that intertwines with government and politics to control the masses of humanity and resources.
And how ‘TRUTH’ can really cause so many questions and problems for people.
People don’t like to have their foundations shaken.
But Jeff and I are really such a perfect match.
Because we care about that kind of stuff. And we’re willing to ‘go there’ and ask the difficult questions. Even if the answers are inconvenient. Even if it means giving up lifelong friendships and relationships.
And that’s what we do during our weekly ‘Coffee Church.’
What do you do on Sunday mornings?
I’d love to hear about your own rituals and traditions.
Until next time.
Blessings and Hugs,
Tracy
