This was a commissioned memorial piece. Joseph contacted me about a custom piece he wanted to memorialize his sweetheart who had recently died after a battle with cancer. He purchased this very large piece of wood...I think it was maple...that he wanted the work done on. The wood hadn't been properly seasoned, and as I burned the art, the wood leaked sap onto the surface, making it very difficult to get a good burn. Combined with the marbled color on the wood, the portrait just wasn't turning out as I would have liked. So, I suggested we add color according to the source photo. And he was very happy with the final result.
